Young players enjoy academy’s second national camp of the summer

Boys and girls have enjoyed the second of two summer national camps hosted by the Ricki Herbert Football Academy in Hamilton.

They travelled from throughout New Zealand to attend the four-day event at the grounds of St Paul’s Collegiate, Hamilton, between January 17-20, 2022.

Almost 70 players took part, meaning more than 160 boys and girls got the chance over summer to participate in national camps. The first camp took place in December.

Holding two camps has enabled the academy to cater for large numbers of players without having to compromise the programme.

Academy founder Ricki Herbert was pleased with the enthusiasm and effort from players and thanked their families and supporters for making the camp possible.

“The families and supporters are outstanding – it makes a huge difference to the young players when they can have this sort of opportunity,” he said.

Attendance at the academy’s national camps has grown significantly over the past four years, despite the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic during the past two years.

The 2020 camp was attended by 160 players, compared to about 100 in 2019 and 65 the year before.
