Coach Ricki Herbert and his Maldives U-23 national team are off to a flying start at the 2016 South Asian Games being held in Guwahaty and Shallong, India.
In the opening round of the tournament, Maldives beat Sri Lanka 3-1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati.
Ahmed Nashid put Herbert’s side ahead in the 10th and Ansar Ibrahim doubled his team’s lead in the 28th minute.
Ansar Ibrahim increased the margin to three goals with a good solo effort in the 58th minute.
Rifnas reduced the deficit, scoring for Sri Lanka in the 61st minute.
The Maldives have been drawn in Group A – along with Sri Lanka and hosts India – while the teams in Group B are Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
