“WE HAVE a new look squad and we’re building for the future”said a confident looking Ricki Herbert at the pre-tournament press conference held at Hotel Vivanta By Taj in Trivandrum.

“We’re very much looking forward to a competitive tournament with excellent teams and are very honoured to be here. “ said Herbert who has set his target on making Maldivian people proud. The head coach of Maldives also spoke about the high hopes he has on the young squad.

“This is a good testing ground for us, the new players” said Herbert. “We’re proud to be part of this tournament”

When asked how he rated his opponents in Group B, he was quick to point out Bangladesh’s tie against Australia, Bhutan’s performance in the World Cup qualifiers and Afghanistan’s recent form as factors that should make it a difficult Group to compete in.

Herbert also maintained that the friendlies played in Malaysia were about the performances rather than results and that he’s pleased about the combination of players he has.

Maldives are up against Bhutan on December 24, with the match scheduled to take place at Trivandrum International Stadium, Kariavattom.
