Forty-eight players, supported by 10 staff, have completed the latest national tour by the Ricki Herbert Football Academy.

The tour began in Auckland on Monday January 24, with two days of matches with teams from Fencibles United and Bay Olympic.

From there, the touring party flew to Christchurch for games hosted by Nomads, Coastal Spirit and the Christchurch United academy.

The players flew north to Wellington for two days of games against North Wellington and Petone club teams before the players returned home on Sunday.

“It’s providing the players with great experiences on and off the pitch,” academy founder Ricki Herbert said after the squad’s first day in Auckland.

“The opportunity to travel together, stay in hotels and work together off the pitch, helps the players develop their social skills, as well as their football skills.

“It’s all about helping them get the most from football.”

Herbert said the 2022 national tour included a large contingent of coaches, managers and support staff to look after the large playing group.

He congratulated players who received coaches awards including Gethyn Foster, Will James, Luke Brooke-Smith, Sam Leyland, Fraser Gray and Hayden Lee who received the Clive Herbert Award.

The RHFA has been operating national and international tours since 2013.

Its last tour, named the Liberato Cacace Tour to honour the academy graduate and All White of the same name, visited Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in 2021 with 27 players.
