Herbert’s Maldives reach semi-finals

The Ricki Herbert-coached Maldives have become the first side to clinch a semi-final berth at the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament in Bangladesh after beating the home nation 2-0 in their group match.

Playing at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Easa Ismail and Imaaz Ahmed scored in the 16th and 23rd minutes to secure the victory against the Bangladesh U-23 Olympic Games team.
In the opening game of the tournament, Maldives beat Cambodia 3-2, and with two wins, Herbert’s young team is now certain of a place in the last four.

Herbert’s team play Bahrain in the final game of Group B on Sunday (NZT) and will learn then who they will meet in the semi-finals on January 18-19.
