Big names of football continue to meet on and off pitch

One of the great things about football is the way friendships and families can continue to enjoy time together, long after the final whistle.

A great example was last weekend when football provided another opportunity for Ricki and Kale Herbert to reunite with former All Whites coach Kevin Fallon at the replayed ISPS Handa Chatham Cup tie between Hamilton Wanderers and Manukau United.

The bonds between the Herbert and Fallon families go back to the late 1970s when Ricki Herbert (emerging as a teenage international prospect) first worked with Kevin Fallon (then, assistant coach of the All Whites).

Since then:

  • Herbert went to the 1982 FIFA World Cup Finals to represent New Zealand in the squad co-coached by Fallon.
  • When New Zealand next reached the World Cup Finals in 2010, Ricki Herbert was the national coach … and one of his key players was striker Rory Fallon, son of Kevin.
  • Two seasons ago, the Chatham Cup brought together the Herberts and Fallons … when Ricki’s son Kale was coaching Taupo and they drew against the Kevin Fallon-coached Manukau City.
  • Last weekend, Kale Herbert was coach of Hamilton Wanderers in the cup tie against Manukau United, coached by Fallon, a match won 3-1 by the Aucklanders.

Ricki was there to watch the match, and to enjoy the post-match reunion.
